n8n vs Zapier Agents comes down to control versus convenience: n8n wins for technical teams who want self-hosting, auditable runs and predictable execution-based pricing, while Zapier Agents wins for non-technical teams already living in Zapier who want agents that act across 9,000+ apps. If you already pay for Zapier, adding Agents is the path of least resistance. If you want to own your infrastructure and your costs, n8n is the stronger pick.

How do n8n and Zapier Agents actually work?

n8n is a visual workflow-automation platform where AI agents are a first-class building block. You drop an AI Agent node onto a canvas, give it a model, memory and tools, and mix it with deterministic steps around it. According to n8n’s AI agents page, agents can use 600+ native integrations plus your own workflows as tools, you can replay any run to see where it broke, and you can set which actions require human approval.

Zapier Agents sits on top of Zapier’s automation platform (Zaps, Tables, Forms, MCP). You describe an agent — with help from Zapier Copilot — connect it to business data, and let it work on command or on a schedule. Zapier’s own examples include a lead-enrichment agent, an IT helpdesk Slack responder, a support-email agent that drafts replies from your knowledge base, and a candidate-ranking agent.

The practical difference: n8n shows you the plumbing; Zapier hides it. n8n’s canvas suits people who think in flows. Zapier’s describe-it approach suits people who think in outcomes.

How much does n8n cost compared to Zapier Agents?

n8n is cheaper to predict for multi-step agents, because it prices per workflow execution — one full run counts once, regardless of how many steps it contains. n8n’s pricing page lists:

  1. Community Edition — free, self-hosted, available on GitHub.
  2. Starter — €20/mo billed annually: hosted by n8n, 1 shared project, 5 concurrent executions, agents, MCP and AI nodes, 1,600 Assistant credits/month.
  3. Pro — €50/mo billed annually: 3 shared projects, up to 50 concurrent executions, admin roles, workflow history, up to 9,600 Assistant credits/month.
  4. Business — €667/mo billed annually: self-hosted, SSO/LDAP, multiple environments, queue mode, Git version control.
  5. Enterprise — contact sales: hosted or self-hosted, 200+ concurrent executions, dedicated support with SLA.

All n8n plans include unlimited users, unlimited workflows and every integration. Companies with fewer than 20 employees can apply for a Start-up Plan with 50% off Business.

Zapier’s pricing works differently. Zapier’s pricing page lists platform plans — Free ($0, 100 tasks/month, two-step Zaps), Professional (from $19.99/mo), Team (from $69/mo, 25 users, SAML SSO) and Enterprise (contact sales) — with Agents and Chatbots priced as add-ons on top. Every Zap step and external connector call uses tasks, and the AI model tier, code runtime and connector type affect how many tasks an action uses. Tasks are shared across the account: Zaps, AI steps, code, MCP and SDK all draw from one allocation. Yearly billing saves 33% versus monthly.

The catch: Zapier does not publish a single sticker price for the Agents add-on on the facts we have — it says “See Zapier pricing (Agents tab)”. Treat the total cost as plan plus add-on, and model your task usage before committing.

Which is easier to use for non-technical teams?

Zapier Agents is easier for non-technical teams, full stop. You describe what you want, Zapier Copilot helps build it, and the agent reuses the app connections your team has already wired into Zapier. There is no canvas to learn.

n8n is built for technical operators. The visual canvas is approachable, but you are still designing workflows — choosing nodes, wiring branches, deciding where the agent stops and deterministic logic begins. n8n’s own positioning in our directory flags “complete beginners who want a chat-only ‘describe it and done’ assistant” as a poor fit.

If your team has never automated anything and just wants a support-email drafter running this week, start with Zapier Agents. If someone on the team enjoys building systems, n8n will reward them.

Which gives you more control over your data?

n8n gives you more control, and it is not close. It is the only one of the two you can self-host: the Community Edition is free on GitHub, and the Business plan (€667/mo billed annually) adds SSO/LDAP, multiple environments, queue mode and Git version control for self-hosted deployments. For cloud customers, n8n states that hosted data is stored in the EU, on servers in Frankfurt, Germany.

Zapier Agents is cloud-only. The facts we hold do not specify Zapier’s data residency, so if you have strict requirements — EU-only storage, on-prem, air-gapped — n8n is the default answer. For more options in this vein, see our roundup of the best self-hosted AI agent builders and the open-source and self-hosted category.

Which scales better for high-volume agent workflows?

n8n scales more predictably for high-volume, multi-step work. Because one execution covers a whole run, a 15-step agent workflow costs the same as a 2-step one per run. On Pro you get up to 50 concurrent executions; Enterprise supports 200+.

On Zapier, every step and connector call draws tasks from one shared pool, and AI model tier and connector type change how many tasks an action uses. A busy multi-step agent can burn through an allocation faster than you expect. Zapier’s own directory entry flags “very high-volume multi-step runs where per-task billing adds up” as a poor fit.

Illustrative scenario: a 5-person agency reselling a support bot that triages, enriches and drafts replies across 2,000 inbound emails a month. On n8n, that is 2,000 executions — easy to map to a plan. On Zapier, each email might consume tasks for the trigger, the AI step, the knowledge lookup and the send, all from a shared pool that also feeds the agency’s other Zaps. Model both before you choose.

Which is better for agencies?

n8n is better for agencies building client-facing systems. Self-hosting means you can run client workloads on infrastructure you control, human approval for tool calls lets you keep a person in the loop, and replayable runs make debugging client issues faster. The sub-20-employee Start-up Plan (50% off Business) is aimed squarely at small agencies. See our guide to the best no-code AI agent builders for agencies.

Zapier Agents is better if your agency’s clients already live on Zapier — you can ship agents on top of their existing connections without migrating anything.

What are the main limitations of each?

n8n’s limits: 600+ native integrations is a lot, but it is not 9,000+ — niche SaaS apps may need a custom node or webhook. The canvas has a learning curve, and there is no pure chat-based “describe it and done” mode.

Zapier Agents’ limits: no self-hosting, task-based billing that can surprise you on multi-step runs, and an add-on price you have to dig out of the pricing page’s Agents tab. You are also renting the whole stack — if you outgrow it, migrating means rebuilding.

If neither fits, our Zapier Agents alternatives page and the workflow automation agents category cover the wider field, including Make (see n8n vs Make) and Lindy for chat-first assistants.

Bottom line

Pick n8n if you want control: self-hosting, EU-hosted cloud, execution-based pricing from €20/mo and agents you can audit run by run. Pick Zapier Agents if your team already runs on Zapier and values 9,000+ app coverage and a no-canvas setup over cost control. Both products are active as of October 2026; our hands-on testing notes are pending, so this verdict rests on vendor-published facts.

What to ask next:

Frequently asked questions

Is n8n cheaper than Zapier Agents?

For multi-step agent workflows, usually yes. n8n's cloud plans start at €20/month billed annually and price per workflow execution — one full run counts once regardless of steps. Zapier uses task-based pricing where every step and connector call draws from a shared task pool, and Agents is an add-on on top of platform plans starting at $19.99/month.

Can I self-host Zapier Agents?

No. Zapier Agents is cloud-only. If self-hosting matters, n8n offers a free self-hosted Community Edition on GitHub, plus a self-hosted Business plan at €667/month billed annually.

Which has more app integrations, n8n or Zapier Agents?

Zapier Agents, by a wide margin. Zapier says its agents can act across 9,000+ apps. n8n says its agents get 600+ native integrations plus your own workflows as tools.

Which is better for beginners, n8n or Zapier Agents?

Zapier Agents. You describe the agent with help from Zapier Copilot and it reuses your existing Zapier app connections. n8n uses a visual canvas that rewards technical operators but has a steeper learning curve.

Does n8n have a free plan for AI agents?

Yes. n8n's self-hosted Community Edition is free and available on GitHub. Zapier's free plan includes 100 tasks per month with two-step Zaps, but Agents is priced as an add-on.

Where is my data stored with n8n and Zapier?

n8n states that hosted cloud data is stored in the EU, on servers in Frankfurt, Germany, and you can self-host for full control. The facts we have for Zapier Agents do not specify data residency — ask Zapier directly if this matters to you.
