n8n: Visual workflow automation with built-in AI agents, self-hostable or cloud.
n8n is a visual workflow-automation platform where AI agents are a first-class building block: you drop an AI Agent node into a workflow, give it a model, memory and tools, and mix it with deterministic steps. Cloud plans start at €20/month billed annually, and a self-hosted Community Edition is available on GitHub — which makes n8n the default pick for teams that want agents they can audit and host themselves.
What is n8n?
n8n positions itself as the place where deterministic workflows and AI agents live side by side. Its AI agents page says agents get 600+ native integrations and your own workflows as tools, that you can replay any run to see where it broke, and that you can set which actions require human approval. n8n also lists 7,500+ community-built templates. Pricing is based on executions — one run of a whole workflow — rather than on steps or tasks, which tends to make multi-step agent workflows cheaper to predict than on per-step tools.

Who is n8n best for — and who should skip it?
Good fit
- Technical operators and agencies who want to self-host
- Teams that need auditable agents mixed with deterministic logic
- EU-based companies that care where data is stored
- High-volume, multi-step workflows (execution-based pricing)
Look elsewhere if you need
- Complete beginners who want a chat-only ‘describe it and done’ assistant
- Teams that need 9,000+ app connectors out of the box (Zapier has more)
Our verdict on n8n
If you can handle a visual canvas and want control — self-hosting, approvals, replayable runs — n8n is the strongest general-purpose no-code agent builder. If you just want an assistant that works in Slack and email with no canvas, look at Lindy instead.
