OpenAI Agent Builder alternatives are now a necessity, not a preference: OpenAI’s AgentKit announcement (updated 3 June 2026) confirms Agent Builder and Evals will no longer be available from 30 November 2026. The best replacement for most teams is n8n (self-hostable, from €20/month), with Zapier Agents, Make, Gumloop and Langflow covering specific needs.

Why are people leaving OpenAI Agent Builder?

People are leaving because the product is being retired. Agent Builder launched on 6 October 2025 as part of AgentKit — a visual canvas with drag-and-drop nodes, tool connections, guardrails, preview runs and versioning, plus ChatKit for embedding chat agents.

OpenAI’s 3 June 2026 update to its AgentKit page states that Agent Builder and Evals will no longer be available from 30 November 2026. OpenAI recommends the Agents SDK for code-based workflows and Workspace Agents in ChatGPT for natural-language use cases.

That leaves two gaps. The Agents SDK requires writing code, and Workspace Agents live inside ChatGPT rather than in your own stack. If you want a visual builder you control — with your own app connections, approvals and hosting — you need a third-party tool. Our hands-on testing notes for the tools below are pending; everything here is based on vendor pages.

How do the top OpenAI Agent Builder alternatives compare?

1. Is n8n the best overall OpenAI Agent Builder alternative?

Yes — for teams that want control, n8n is the strongest general-purpose replacement. Like Agent Builder, it gives you a visual canvas where AI agents are a first-class building block: you drop an AI Agent node into a workflow, give it a model, memory and tools, and mix it with deterministic steps.

n8n’s AI agents page says agents get 600+ native integrations plus your own workflows as tools, that you can replay any run to see where it broke, and that you can set which actions require human approval. It also lists 7,500+ community-built templates.

Pricing is based on workflow executions — one full run counts once, regardless of steps — which makes multi-step agent workflows cheaper to predict than per-step tools. n8n’s pricing page lists the Starter plan at €20/month billed annually, Pro at €50/month, and a free self-hosted Community Edition on GitHub. All plans include unlimited users and workflows, and hosted data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany).

Who it suits: technical operators, agencies and EU-based companies that want auditable, self-hostable agents. Illustrative example: a 10-person agency rebuilding a client’s lead-qualification agent could self-host n8n, keep data in-house, and require human approval before the agent emails anyone.

2. Is Make the closest visual-canvas replacement?

Yes — Make is the closest experience to Agent Builder’s drag-and-drop canvas, and it adds something Agent Builder didn’t: a Reasoning panel that shows every decision the agent makes, step by step, on the canvas.

Make’s AI agents page says agents connect to 3,500+ pre-built apps, that no coding experience is needed, and that you can add manual approvals or stop the agent at specific points. Make’s own guidance: use automation when a workflow just needs doing, and an agent when it needs judgment — for example with unstructured text, messages or documents.

Make’s pricing page lists a free plan with 1,000 credits per month; paid Core, Pro and Teams plans are credit-based, with most actions using 1 credit and some AI features using more. There is no self-hosting option.

Who it suits: visual thinkers and SMB ops teams who want to watch the agent reason. Illustrative example: a 5-person e-commerce team could rebuild a support-triage agent that reads inbound messages, decides priority, and hands edge cases to a human — all visible in the Reasoning panel.

3. Is Zapier Agents the best for app coverage?

Yes — Zapier Agents wins on breadth: Zapier’s agents page says agents can work across 9,000+ apps, more than any other builder in this directory. If your team already runs on Zapier, agents reuse the same app connections, which makes migration fast.

You describe an agent — with help from Zapier Copilot — connect it to business data, and let it work on command or on a schedule. Zapier’s examples include a lead-enrichment agent, an IT helpdesk Slack responder, and a support-email agent that drafts replies from your knowledge base.

Zapier’s pricing page lists Agents as an add-on on top of platform plans (Free with 100 tasks/month, Professional from $19.99/month, Team from $69/month). All AI steps, code and connector calls draw from one shared task pool, so very high-volume multi-step runs can add up.

Who it suits: non-technical teams already wired into Zapier who need simple delegated tasks — enrich, triage, draft. Not for self-hosting or strict data-residency needs.

4. Is Gumloop the best for business teams and browser agents?

Yes — Gumloop is the most business-team-friendly option, and the only one here whose agents can operate a real browser on sites without an API. Agents can sign in with saved logins, browse, click, type, upload and pull data, then hand off to a person when needed, recording every session.

Gumloop’s pricing page lists Pro from $37/month with a 14-day free trial, 20,000 credits per month, 35+ models with bring-your-own API keys, MCP server hosting — and unlimited agents and seats, which is unusual among agent builders that price per user. Note the 8% orchestration fee on Pro. There is no permanent free plan and no self-hosting.

Who it suits: ops, sales and marketing teams, especially where work happens on websites without APIs. Illustrative example: a marketing team could rebuild a competitor-monitoring agent that logs into portals, pulls pricing and posts a summary to Slack — with unlimited seats for the whole team.

5. Is Langflow the best free and open-source option?

Yes — Langflow is fully free and open source, and the best bridge between Agent Builder’s visual canvas and OpenAI’s recommended Agents SDK. Every component is Python under the hood, so you get visual flows without losing code-level control.

Langflow’s site says it supports all major LLMs and vector databases, ships hundreds of pre-built flows and components, and builds both AI agents and MCP servers. You can self-host it anywhere or deploy on a free cloud account (version 1.13 at the time of writing).

Who it suits: developers and technical teams whose prototypes will grow into production. If someone on your team writes Python, Langflow gives you Agent Builder’s visual style with an escape hatch to code. Non-technical business users should look at Make or Zapier Agents instead.

How do you migrate off OpenAI Agent Builder before 30 November 2026?

  1. Inventory your agents. List every Agent Builder workflow, its tools, guardrails and how often it runs.
  2. Pick your target. Self-host or audit needs → n8n or Langflow. Widest app coverage → Zapier Agents. Visual reasoning → Make. Browser tasks → Gumloop.
  3. Rebuild the highest-volume agent first. Use templates where they exist (n8n lists 7,500+ community templates) to speed this up.
  4. Run both in parallel. Keep Agent Builder live while you validate the replacement’s outputs and approvals.
  5. Add human approval for risky actions. n8n and Make both support manual approvals before tool calls.
  6. Switch off before 30 November 2026. Export anything you need from Agent Builder before the retirement date.

Bottom line

OpenAI Agent Builder shuts down on 30 November 2026, so start migrating now. For most teams, n8n is the best replacement — visual canvas, human approval, self-hosting and predictable execution pricing from €20/month. Choose Zapier Agents for app breadth, Make for visible reasoning, Gumloop for browser work, or Langflow for free open source with Python control.
